The Sacrament of Holy Baptism
For Lutherans, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church’s way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God. In Holy Baptism, God bestows grace to us. It is how God claims us as children of God, clothes us with the righteousness of Christ, and seals us with the Holy Spirit so that we can go and share Christ with others.
We believe that any child or adult may receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. We offer a Baptismal preparation class upon request. At these classes, we teach what God promises to do in the waters of Baptism. We also teach about other milestones on the journey of faith.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion
As Lutherans, we believe the Eucharist (Holy Communion) is the real presence of Jesus Christ and that He lovingly offers Himself as spiritual nourishment to us. This intimate exchange with our Lord strengthens us spiritually and brings us closer to God. It also increases our capacity to love one another more fully and to live in Christian community.
We invite any baptized person to receive instruction on receiving Holy Communion. Typically, children begin to receive Holy Communion in the 2nd grade. “There is no command from our Lord regarding the age at which people should be…first communed” (Use of the Means of Grace).
Children and their parents will be invited to attend two instructional classes in preparation to receive First Communion. One parent/adult is required to be with each student at each class. Classes are usually held once in the spring and once in the fall or upon request. First Communion is received either on a Sunday during the Easter season or in the fall.
What Your Child Will Learn
To properly prepare our young people to receive Holy Communion, Our Redeemer’s First Communion classes focus on the importance of knowing God’s love which underlies all aspects of Christian life. Students will learn that Holy Communion is:
• Remembering
• Eating and drinking
• Receiving forgiveness
• Giving thanks
• Celebrating
• Being together
• Looking to the future
• Being strengthened to serve God
Both students and parents will receive an instructional booklet. Once students receive their First Communion, they are encouraged to regularly attend worship and receive the Sacrament.
Children who come to Our Redeemer from another congregation where they have been accepted as communing members will be received as communing members.
