POSITION: Director of Youth and Family Ministries
Supervision: Pastor Drew Goodson
 
Part Time (10-20 hours per week), salaried position that reports directly to the Pastor while working with the Faith Development Team and Congregational volunteers. The term of commitment is one year.
 
Position Purpose:
The Director of Youth and Family Ministries will work to encourage, inspire, and nurture young people, their families, and other members of the congregation in the Christian faith. This individual should equip parents, mentors and others with the skills and opportunities to serve in the faith development of youth from birth through high school.
 
Qualifications:
Since the Director of Youth and Family Ministries will play a significant role in the faith development of our congregation, Our Redeemer seeks a professional leader with a solid understanding of the Christian faith, an appreciation for a Lutheran perspective on faith, and experience with Christian Education. The following qualifications are desirable:
  1. Sense of call to be a Christian educator
  2. Excellent communication skills
  3. Ability to work well with youth and adults
  4. Familiarity with Lutheran theology
  5. Understanding of Christian Education
  6. Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
  7. Successful completion of criminal background check
 
Responsibilities:
Subject to review and adjustment in conjunction with the Pastor, Faith Development Team, and Congregation Council (when appropriate), the following constitute the main responsibilities of the Director of Youth and Family Ministries.
 
I. Faith Formation
The Director of Youth and Family Ministries will help the congregation to develop and maintain faith building activities and programs. These programs will occur in Sunday School, and potentially on week nights or during Vacation Bible School. The Director is asked to teach our youth, as well as recruit, support and train the volunteers needed to staff educational programs. The Director will assist with the selection of teaching materials and in the production of special programs.
 
II. Youth Ministry
The Director will develop and lead a youth ministry program that includes the involvement of youth in various aspects of congregational life. This program should involve Bible Study, worship services, service outings, and youth events sponsored by the ELCA, Region 9, and the North Carolina Synod. The Director will work with the Pastor and Faith Development team to create an on-going vision for youth ministry. While serving as a mentor to the youth, the Director is also expected to recruit and train others to act in this capacity.
 
III. Family Ministry
In support of Family Ministry, the Director is asked to develop creative ways to reach out to the community. It is important for them to make initial and follow-up contacts with church visitors who have children. Developing and maintaining a relationship with parents and including them in the ministry is essential. A Director is needed who will organize, direct and motivate parents and volunteers to nurture the formation of youth.
 
IV. Other Responsibilities
As a leader in the congregation, the Director will be asked to provide informative articles for the monthly newsletter and weekly bulletin. They are asked to coordinate communication among families The Director will meet regularly with the church staff, Faith Development Team and occasionally with the Congregation Council. This individual will perform other duties as assigned. When helpful, the Director is expected to cultivate partnerships with other congregations and organizations in Greenville to enhance faith development.
 
Congregational Support

  4. Review the terms of your employment on an annual basis.
 
Evaluation
  1. Periodic evaluation by the Pastor, Vice-President of the congregation, and Chair of the Faith Development Team will be completed, no less often than annually.
  2. An annual progress report shall be submitted to the Congregation Council, noting specific activities and outcomes.
  3. There will be an annual written evaluation of the work of this position, and the effectiveness of the programs and Director.

Our Redeemer’s mission statement is: “To Be Christ to One Another and To Our Community.” We are a middle-sized congregation, with worship attendance averaging 90. We are located in the center of Greenville, NC. We see the spiritual growth of youth and adults as a responsibility shared by all our members.
